What is a language?

A language is a system of communication used to express thoughts, ideas, emotions, and information between individuals or groups.

Language = a structured way to communicate meaning

 

Key aspects of a language

  1. Symbols
    These can be sounds (spoken words), letters (written text), signs (sign language), or even symbols (mathematics).

  2. Rules (Grammar)
    Every language follows rules that define how symbols are combined to make meaningful messages.

  3. Meaning
    Language allows us to convey meaning—facts, feelings, instructions, or abstract ideas.

  4. Medium
    Language can be:

    • Spoken (e.g., English, Hindi)

    • Written

    • Signed (e.g., sign languages)

    • Symbolic (e.g., mathematics, programming languages)
